Reading Lists for EYFS KS1 and KS2

Finding the right book can spark a child’s imagination and help them develop a lifelong love of reading. Our suggested reading lists below help families discover books to enjoy at home, while broadening children’s vocabulary and introducing new authors, ideas and styles of writing.

The lists are organised by year group, but these are a guide rather than fixed reading levels. Choose books that match your child’s interests, confidence and understanding. Some will be suitable for independent reading; others offer an enjoyable challenge when shared with an adult.

Reading aloud to your child remains valuable throughout primary school. It allows them to enjoy stories beyond their current reading ability and gives you opportunities to discuss unfamiliar words, characters and ideas together.

For children learning to read, these suggestions complement the reading books provided by school. Please continue to practise with their school reading book regularly.

Above all, reading should be enjoyable. Revisiting favourites is just as welcome as trying something new. If you would like help choosing a suitable book, please speak to your child’s class teacher.
